The district of Pabna had a leading role during the War of Liberation in 1971. On 23 March, the indomitable sons of Pabna town hoisted the flag of free Bangladesh at the premises of Town Hall at the heart of the town. On 28 March, they over-powered the Pakistani soldiers in the gun-battle at the premises of the old telephone exchange building.
A vast area including Pabna proper thana became free from the enemies and came under control of the freedom fighters. It situation remained so till 10 April when a large number of Pakistani soldiers armed with heavy weapons fired shells and bombed from the fighter-planes to scatter the freedom fighters.
