Selected Poems: Rudra Muhammad Shahidullah is a collection of Rudra’s remarkable poems, which Mohammad Shafiqul Islam has selected and translated into English.
Poetry translation is no doubt challenging but not impossible, and the translator has attempted to convey the essence of the primary text, remaining as close to the original as possible.
One of the leading figures of Bengali poetry, Rudra merits extensive readership across borders—hence this venture of translation for the readers beyond Bangladesh. His work addresses a wide range of themes such as love, conflict, grief, alienation, inequality, bigotry,
resistance, anguish, disillusionment, and decadence, but a majority of the poems exhibit romantic, revolutionary, and rebellious spirit. Apart from these dominant reflections,
the poems in this collection offer a commentary on the country, culture, nature, war, gender, power, politics, and aesthetics. Deeply rooted in his motherland and culture,
while the poet reveals concerns about the reality around the globe, he also celebrates life, literature, and aesthetics singing the song of humanity so that the world becomes more beautiful and more habitable.
